China to send troops to Russia. Chinese military personnel will deploy to Russia to participate in joint military drills with Russia, Belarus, Mongolia, Tajikistan, and other nations, the Chinese defence ministry announced on Wednesday.
The ministry stated in a statement that China's participation in the joint drills was "unrelated to the current international and regional circumstances."
Moscow revealed intentions to perform "Vostok" (East) drills from August 30 to September 5 last month, all the while waging an expensive war in Ukraine. Without identifying them, it was stated at the time that certain foreign forces would take part.
The most recent of these exercises occurred in 2018, when China participated for the first time.
According to China's defence ministry, its involvement in the drills was a requirement of a continuing bilateral yearly cooperation agreement with Russia.
According to the statement, "the goal is to develop friendly and practical cooperation with the militaries of participating nations, increase the degree of strategic cooperation among the participating parties, and build the capacity to respond to diverse security challenges."
Beijing and Moscow have gotten closer under Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
Shortly before Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, Beijing and Moscow announced a “no limits” partnership, although U.S. officials say they have not seen China evade U.S.-led sanctions on Russia or provide it with military equipment.
Russia’s eastern military district includes part of Siberia and has its headquarters in Khabarovsk, near the Chinese border.
