The most in-depth and thorough infrared glimpse of the cosmos ever has been revealed by NASA in the form of colour photos of stars and galaxies that are billions of years old.
Images from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope shed light on stars and galaxies 13 billion light-years away that are 13 billion years old.
These pictures show the Stephens Quintet, the Southern Ring Planetary Nebula, and the Kazakh Cliffs.
The universe we can't see
View these James Webb Space Telescope pictures in full colour. These photographs bring in a new era of astronomy and demonstrate the capabilities of all four instruments on Webb, from nearby exoplanets to the farthest galaxies in our early cosmos. JPL oversees the Mid-Infrared Instrument (or MIRI), one of those instruments, on behalf of NASA.
