WHO IS IMRAN KHAN? (LEADER OR NOT?)
Imran Khan is Pakistan's 22nd Prime Minister and a former international cricketer. He was chancellor of the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom from 2005 to 2014, in addition to being the captain of the Pakistan national cricket team. Khan is the head of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, which he formed in 1996. He started a fundraising campaign to build a cancer hospital in Lahore in memory of his mother and raised $25 million.
His paternal family is Pashtun and belongs to the Niazi tribe, and he was born in Lahore. Khan grew raised in an upper-middle-class family with his four sisters. He attended the Royal Grammar School in Worcester, England, and excelled in cricket there. In 1972, he entered in Oxford's Keble College to study Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, graduating in 1975.
Khan made his Test debut against England at Edgbaston in 1971. He returned to Pakistan in 1976 and was given a regular spot on the national squad. Khan was one of the first to use the reverse swing bowling technique in the late 1970s. He also has the second-highest all-time batting average for a Test batsman playing at number six in the batting order, with 61.86.
Khan took over as captain of the Pakistan cricket team in 1982 and remained in that position until his retirement.
Khan founded Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on April 25, 1996, and ran for a seat in the National Assembly of Pakistan as a PTI candidate in two constituencies – Mianwali and Lahore – in the 1997 Pakistani general election, but was unsuccessful, losing both seats to Pakistan Muslim League candidates.
He ran in the Pakistani general election in October 2002 and was prepared to create a coalition if his party did not win a majority of the vote. From Mianwali, he was elected.Khan spoke to a crowd of nearly 100,000 supporters in Lahore on October 30, 2011, opposing the government's policies. In 2011, hundreds of thousands of supporters attended another successful public rally in Karachi. Since then, he has posed a serious threat to the country.
Khan ran in the 2018 General Elections from Bannu, Islamabad, Mianwali, Lahore, and Karachi East. The Pakistan Election Commission stated on July 28 that the PTI has won 116 of the 270 seats up for grabs.
He set forth the policy outlines for his future government during his victory address. Khan has stated that he feels inspired to develop Pakistan as a humanitarian state based on the principles of Medina, the first Islamic state. On foreign policy, he praised China and hoped to have better relations with Afghanistan, the United States, and India.
On February 22, 2022, Khan said that he would like to have a TV debate with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi to resolve differences between the two neighbouring countries.
